Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the table?

There are several options. You can read details about all the dimensions on the specs page.

We've taken care to strike a balance between being able to fit all kinds of games on the table and being able to comfortably reach across it. Read the comparision page to understand the primary purpose of each model we offer and the tradeoffs between them. The last thing we want to do is sell you a table that's the wrong size.

If you aren't sure which model is right for you, we'd love to talk to you about it some more. Email help@boardgametables.com.

What makes this table better than my dining room table for playing games?

Without a doubt, you can have fun playing anywhere, on any surface. But, a BoardGameTables.com's table has some extra features and qualities that will take your game night to the next level.

The inset playing area gives you somewhere to rest your elbows and stops dice from rolling off the tables.

The padded surface makes it easy to pick up cards.

Cup holders keep your games safe from spills.

Drawers give you a place to store your baggies, mini poker chips, dice, and score pads.

The dimensions are designed so you can comfortably reach the game board.

The table topper lets you convert your table into a dining table.

That was just a brief overview. We dedicated a whole page to talking about the board gaming features.

Where are the tables made?

The tables are handmade in southern Missouri. Handmade is a funny term. We use power tools. We're not crazy. But it isn't giant machines and a big computerized process.

Experienced wood workers who have been doing this for years are manually working those tools and making sure everything about your table is perfect. Because of this, every table is unique. Just a little bit different from the last one we made.

How soon will I get my table after ordering?

All tables are made to order. It takes about 60 days from order to delivery. Sometimes a little more. Often times a little less. Getting your table made quickly is very important to us, and we do everything we can to get it to you as quickly as possible.

We will be in regular communication with you so that you know when to expect your table.

How does shipping work?

We've done everything we can to keep shipping costs down. You can also choose to pick up the table from us. We don't make any profit on shipping charges.

Tables are big and heavy. Because of this, your table will be shipped as freight instead of a normal UPS or FedEx parcel delivery, so it will work a little differently than what you may be accustomed to.

When your table arrives at the nearest distribution center, the shipping company will call you to schedule a 3-4 hour window for delivery in the next few days. An adult will have to be home to take delivery.

The delivery service includes removing your table from the truck and setting it on the ground or curbside in front of your home. If your driveway is flat and paved, most drivers will happily wheel your table into or near your garage, but that is not technically required of them. They almost certainly won't bring the table up the stairs or through your front door.

This is a little different than package delivery, but standard practice for freight delivery. Freight companies often charge a couple hundred dollars extra to carry the box inside a residence.

Your table will be shipped on a pallet, weighing between 200 and 300 pounds, depending on what wood and options you order. The box can be removed from the pallet to make make it lighter and easier to carry. If you open up the box and carry in the topper, table, and legs separately, no piece will be more than 80 pounds. A relatively easy job for two strong adults. Not something you should attempt with one person.

How much assembly is required?

Your table will be shipped with the legs detached. You’ll put one bolt in each leg to secure it to the table. Each leg has a triple dowel system that, along with the bolt, provides a very secure connection to the table for extra stability.

If you order any drawers or cup holders you will need to install them. We don't ship them installed to ensure the rails don't get damaged during shipment. Installation is very easy. Just slide them into place and then screw in the stopper.

Setup requires a knife to open the box and a phillips head screw driver to screw in the bolts. It'll take about 15 minutes.

Can I pick up my table instead of having it shipped?

Yes, you can. We can arrange for you to pick up your table near Joplin, MO.

During the order process, there is an option for pick up instead of shipping. Just choose that and we will work out the details over email or phone.

What type of wood is used to make the table?

The tables are made from oak, knotty alder, cherry, or African Mahogany. Most of the table is made from solid wood. Plywood is used in some large spans where our woodworkers feel that the constant grains and warp resistant properties of plywood make it a better choice. We never use MDF, particle board, composite materials, or paper veneers.

You'll get to choose which wood and which stain options you want during the order process.

Solid Wood, Plywood, Particleboard. What are you using and is it high quality?

Most of your table will be built from solid wood. Legs, table rails, drawer rails, and the support structure are all solid wood.

Some portions of your table are made using high quality plywood. Plywood is just thin sheets of wood that have been glued together at 90 degree angles. We use plywood over large spans because it is stronger than solid wood in those situations and less prone to warping. (This is the same reason that high quality Crokinole board are made with plywood.)

Let's not confuse plywood with particle board or pressed board. These "wood products" are more like cardboard than wood. You won't find any of that cheap stuff in your new table.

Who is behind BoardGameTables.com?

BoardGameTables.com is owned by me, Chad DeShon. I've been playing board games my whole life. I got hooked on hobby games, like so many people, by playing Settlers of Catan in college.

Like many of my gaming friends, I wanted a quality table that was built specifically for board games. And, I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg.

After a couple of years of wishing, I finally met with a quality local furniture maker. We exchanged ideas and hundreds of emails, built some prototypes, and the rest is history.

Can you make customizations to the table?

There are several wood, stain, and fabric colors, for you to choose between. Additionally, you can add drawers, cup holders, and a topper.

Sometimes we can make additional customizations. It just depends on what you want. If we do, there is an additional cost. Please email us and we can talk about your table, what we can do, and what we can't do.

We really wish we could make every custom request that we get, but keeping things simple is one of the things that allows us to keep prices as low as possible.

Am I destroying the environment if I order a table?

Nope. Wood is a renewable resource. The suppliers that we buy wood from are required to harvest in a substainable way and plant new trees as they harvest old ones.

Additionally, the shop where we build the tables is powered by solar panels. We think this is great because not only is it a renewable source of energy, but it shows that solar has progressed to the point where it makes econimc sense.
